According to report from Business I, Japan and the China are to start a joint experiment of high-speed wireless communication in China using XGP technology developed in Japan. The experiment is to prepare for the commercial operation in future. The agreement is reached on May 5th. Despite the presence of WiMax, another high-speed wireless communication method developed in the United States, Japan plans the spread XGP in China under the pattern of government-to-government cooperation and is poised to confront WiMax on overseas market.
XGP is a wireless communication method that enables transmission of data information at a speed that ADSL provides for wired systems. WILLCOM have already started test service in Tokyo in April, and unreserved commercial service including data communication on PCs is expected to be provided in October. Unlike existing mobile phones, XGP realizes the same high speed in both receiving and sending data. As XGP enables the transmission of real-time high-vision pictures wirelessly, the possibility to adopt it in video monitoring system on Japan’s road network is being studied.
The experiment in China is to be carried out under cooperation of three parties. WILLCOM will build a telecom network on behalf of Japan, China Science Institute, the top research institute owned by Chinese government will provide experiment facilities, while China Unicom, one of the country’s biggest mobile operators will offer telecom infrastructure.
The experiment is to last for two years. It aims to provide access to educational and the medical institutions in big cities for people from remote areas under XGP network. Remote education and treatment of patients through real time information sharing mechanism can be realized by making use of XGP wireless technology. In addition, experiment to adopt XGP in environment protection and disaster prevention operation are being prepared, in which camera and sensor system carrying XGP wireless devices are to be installed in dams and forests to monitor the change of environmental data and send them to research organs as requested. It is estimated that XGP can be commercialized in China as early as 2011.
3G influence is spreading in China. Meanwhile, the preparations to introduce telecom network for the next generation data communication is pushed forward sturdily. Japanese Government is aiming at the export of infrastructure such as cell-related machinery, by introducing XGP network ahead of WiMax in China. Furthermore, it is planning to add the introduction of XGP to Southeast Asia on its agenda.
