Introduction of XGP Forum

PHS MoU Group changed its name to XGP Forum on April 2nd.  Form this moment on, all rights and obligations born by PHS MoU Group is succeeded by XGP Forum.

    Information about XGP Forum

Technical Title	XGP (eXtended Global Platform)
Purpose	Non-profitable Organization to Standardize Specification and Promote Overseas Service of XGP, a TDD-based mobile broadband telecom method. Major Activities Including Promotion and Acceleration of The Adoption of XGP System Overseas, Provision of Technical Support to Interested Overseas Operators.

      NOTE 1:  Regarding the Function of Respective WGs (Working Groups)
  1. BWG (Business Working Group)
     This working group helps to draft policies to be discussed as important strategies of XGP Forum. It examines individual cases too, and executes individual cases with authorization after reporting the result of examination to the steering committee and general meeting. It also acts as a consultant to other working groups and the steering committee by giving proposals regarding business strategies.
     Therefore, its activities include business trips to relevant countries and areas to hold necessary meetings with other standardization organizations, to develop cooperative relationship with operators and vendors, and to study and incubate new models of applications. Other working groups can carry out examination to the items proposed by business working group.
     
     
  2. TWG (Technical Working Group)
     This working group is in charge of the discussion and examination of all XGP technology related cases. Its major task is to standardize necessary technologies to facilitate the development of XGP service. In addition, its activities include the solution of XGP-related technical themes, standardization of technology related with new services, technical exchange with other standardization organizations, and technical instruction to XGP and potential XGP operator. 　Sub working groups are established under the working group to deal with individual cases. XGP members can apply to join the working group and its sub working groups in a condition to be able to participate in real standard drafting operation. The contents discussed within this working group are not for public access.
     
     
  3. PWG (Promotion Working Group)
     This working group is responsible for familiarize the world with the name of XGP technology and its relevant service. By updating website, releasing newsletter, attending exposition and symposium, publishing guidebook and introducing its applications, the working group is aiming to spread XGP technology and service worldwide.
     
     
  4. OWG (Optimization Working Group)
     This working group studies and proposes the optimization method in using a telecom network by carrying out diagnose to the existing system. The execution of optimization is carried out with the cooperation of local operators and vendors. By carrying out optimizing engineering project, the quality of the network improves drastically, and the knowhow is shared from individual operator is shared to other operators, which leads to the overall improvement of connected service that XGP vendors and operators can jointly provides.
     
     
      NOTE 2:  Regarding the Function of XGP Forum General Meeting
  
  

  XGP Forum General Meeting is the most important decision making organ, which is participated by delegates from all member companies. The chairman and vice chairmen are elected every two years. The general meeting is held once a year principally. Besides, Steering Committee, which is attended by delegates from key members plays the central role of the forum and holds steering committee meetings to give advice and raise proposals for the general meeting.

• Standardization Progress
  
  

  Before XGP Forum is established, standardization process has already been carried out with the joint effort of some member companies. As a result, XGP has already gained acknowledgment and recommendation from the following international standardization organizations as a TDD-based mobile broadband telecom service. • Field Experiment by Operator
  
  

  In Japan, XGP is decided to be adopted by WILLCOM Inc., for which the license to use 2.5Hz frequency was granted on Dec. 2007 by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications. After acquiring license for XGP base stations in January and field test in April, WILLCOM plans to introduce in the service this coming autumn.




•  XGP Overseas Development Scenario

  The following is a scenario of possible way of XGP development overseas: China In China, long waited 3G licenses were granted earlier in the year. Since the introduction of 3G has just started, the appraisal to TDD mobile broadband telecom service like XGP is expected to start afterwards. To start the promotion of XGP, we expect to create cooperative environment among suppliers, operators, research institutes and universities between Japan and China. Field experiment regarding various application of XGP, including remote education, remote medical service, disaster prevention and crime prevention, and joint research and development regarding the standardization of the specification of TDD mobile broadband telecom service can be carried out. In addition, steering committee member of XGP Forum, WILLCOM Inc. has already signed technical cooperation agreement with Unicom in Thailand. Taiwan Despite that WiMax was introduced to Taiwan earlier, there seems to be various problems unsolved. Due to XGP’s advantage on mobility and adaptability to heavy traffic, we expect XGP to be adopted by Taiwan and we’d carry out relevant activities to realize the expansion. Thailand We expect to provide XGP service in Thailand, a country with profound resource of Japanese expatriates and visitors, in future. In addition, steering committee member of XGP Forum, WILLCOM Inc. has already signed technical cooperation agreement with TRUE Corp. in Thailand. Others In addition, possible service in Vietnam and Peru, Chile and Venezuela in South America can be discussed and expected.
