Huawei launches a quick reconstruction solution
for evolving PHS sites into LTE TDD small-cell sites

Huawei recently released a quick reconstruction solution for evolving PHS sites into LTE TDD small-cell sites which utilizes the legacy PHS sites and quickly upgrade them to LTE with low costs. The purpose of the solution is to solve problems such as the difficulty of site acquisition for operators, accelerate LTE network deployment, and offer end users a better mobile broadband experience. This solution also applies to other small-cell sites, such as the sites with eNodeBs installed on lamppost, pole and outdoor Wi-Fi sites.

As mobile data traffic grows explosively, how to accommodate the traffic of hotspots has become the largest challenge of mobile broadband network deployment. Currently there are nearly one million PHS sites in China. How to utilize the resources of these sites and upgrade them to LTE so as to relieve current traffic pressure is very important to operators. These PHS sites are usually very simple and installed either on rooftops or poles, with no equipment rooms and using ordinary twisted pair cables for transmission. AC mains and property access are quite difficult to acquire. As a result, traditional macro station construction is very difficult. To address these issues in the live networks in China and facilitate environmental protection, Huawei proposed the "one optical fiber, one device, and one person in one hour" solution. By deploying LTE micro cells on legacy PHS sites, the solution offers a way to absorb hotspot traffic, fill coverage holes, and relieve the site acquisition pressure.

One Optical Fiber: Only one optical fiber is needed for backhaul. Huawei's LTE small cell supports a variety of transmission access methods such as digital subscriber line (DSL), passive optical network (PON), fast Ethernet (FE)/Gigabit Ethernet (GE), which makes it convenient for backhaul access.

One Device: Only one device is required for PHS site upgrade. Huawei's small-cell base station adopts its design that integrates the baseband processing board, RF module, and antennas. It has built-in antennas with concealed feeder and an outdoor design which is waterproof and dustproof. This base station has already been commercially deployed in Canada, South Korea and Russia, supporting bands such as AWS, 2.1 G, and 2.6 G.

One person in one hour: One person can finish the PHS site upgrade project in one hour. Huawei's LTE small-cell station is small, with volume less than 10 L, and weighs only about 10 kg. It adopts the plug-and-play and self-configuration technologies and is easy to carry and install. It has built-in antennas, which eliminates the need for external antenna installation.

In addition to the main and transmission equipment, other resources such as the power distribution system, pole and antenna system can also be used for Huawei's small cell deployment. The resources are to be coordinated flexibly according to the residential property situation. At the end of March 2013, Huawei launched the first LTE trial site that is deployed at a legacy PHS site. Download rate was tested at 100 Mbit/s, which could effectively ensure the LTE network capacity and performance.

LTE site acquisition has become a common headache for global mobile operators. Huawei utilized legacy PHS sites effectively for the LTE network deployment in Japan in 2010. By using a range of innovative technologies such as Cloud BB (cloud base station), LTE and PHS collocation site, the solution solved the problem of LTE site acquisition, and saved total cost of ownership (TCO) for operators as well. LTE network construction boom will soon begin in China. Huawei's LTE solution utilizing legacy PHS sites will boost LTE development in China.

Ericsson Demo TD-LTE Advanced Using Carrier Aggregation Technology

Ericsson announced its successful demonstration of TD-LTE carrier aggregation technology using standard equipment in November. The demo used two 20MHz carriers on a radio frequency unit, achieved peak download speed of 223Mbps. This is by far the highest wireless bit rate that commercial hardware has ever reached.

TDD operators typically have a wide spectrum, and carrier aggregation technology can integrate two or more carriers as a channel, making operators use the spectrum(for example 20 +20 MHz) more efficiently and have the same conditions with FDD operators that have 20MHz for upstream and downstream each.

The demonstration in Beijing used standard Ericsson Evolved Packet Core Network (Evolved Packet Core) and Ericsson RBS6000 base station running on the existing network of China Mobile, as well as Standard RF unit and data-link board that supports carrier aggregation technology. TM500 test user equipment was provided by Aeroflex(Aeroflex).

Converged TD-LTE/FDD Network
Important Direction of Evolution for Global BWA (Mobile broadband)

China Mobile Hong Kong plans to start TD-LTE commercial network within this year, and provide subscribers with efficient mobile broadband services backed by the integration of LTE TDD / FDD network.

According to reports, converged LTE TDD / FDD network has become an important evolutionary direction of the global mobile broadband, and became commercialized. Converged TDD / FDD LTE network has already been deployed and commercialized by Scandinavian operator Hi3G in Sweden and Denmark. Softbank in Japan has also commercialized TD-LTE and on the basis of it they started up FDD LTE commercial network in late September. Operation of converged network has already begun. European companies such as Vodafone and E-Plus have both TDD and FDD frequencies, and opened integration test network.

FDD (Frequency Division Duplex) and TDD (Time Division Duplex), as two different duplex mode, can be used both symmetric and asymmetric spectrum respectively, have an equivalent performance. Downstream like Video streaming, interactive Web occupy an absolute advantage in the 4G network era, TDD high capacity with asymmetric advantage was approved definitely. Especially in the case of FDD resources increasingly becoming tense, to promote converged LTE TDD / FDD network will become an inevitable trend.

Currently, converged LTE TDD / FDD network has achieved full integration from standard, industry chain to products. Global vendors like Huawei, ZTE, Datang, Ericsson, Nokia Siemens, Alcatel-Lucent have launched TDD / FDD common platform products; chipsets that support both FDD and TDD have also become the target of global chip manufacturers; end-to-end industry has already started to support the development of converged network fully. Let`s see the operator`s response. China Mobile made its point clear in August this year that they needed terminals with multi-mode/multi-band. Five-mode/ten-band TDD/FDD converged device is their long-term development target of the TD-LTE industry. That provided terminal industry a clear product demand, accelerated guidance for terminal launch and maturity.

As the leader of TD-LTE technology, China Mobile has been committed to promoting and supporting the development of LTE TDD / FDD integration and together with GTI, international carriers and global industry formed a cohesive force and jointly accelerated maturity and commercialization of TD-LTE.

At present, China Mobile has successfully completed scale tests, and officially launched expanded scale trial network construction of 10 +3 city. 20,000 base stations will be completed within this year, and large scale trial test will be completed in 2013. To accelerate the integration of the TDD / FDD LTE, China Mobile has solved technical problems, reduced costs and carried out joint research and development on new type base station with manufactures, enriching TD-LTE product types and enhancing the quality of network coverage, providing a strong support for TD-LTE expanding scale trial test.

In addition, China Mobile Hong Kong has also announced adding TD-LTE network to the existing FDD LTE network, building a seamless dual mode network of TD-LTE and FDD LTE in Hong Kong. In June of this year, China Mobile Hong Kong managed to demonstrate the world's first TD-LTE and FDD LTE roaming between Hangzhou and Hong Kong, showing technology solutions for converged TDD / FDD LTE network. By the end of 2012, China Mobile Hong Kong Company will launch TDD / FDD LTE integration of service in Hong Kong, which will become the first dual-mode LTE network in the Asia-Pacific region.

China Mobile accelerates 4G TD-LTE network development and expansion

The development of China's TD-LTE 4G technology is proceeding smoothly both at home and abroad. China Mobile is conducting its Phase 2 scale-trial in 10 cities and aims to construct more than 20,000 base stations through new builds and upgrades this year.

The company revealed in March that it hoped to have a total of more than 200,000 TD-LTE base stations by 2013. "China Mobile has the ability to build as many 4G base stations as it wants in a short period of time," said Xi, a former vice-minister of industry and information technology, who succeeded Wang Jianzhou in March to become China Mobile's chairman.

The target of building 200,000 TD-LTE base stations is realizable, since the company can directly upgrade its 3G stations to advanced 4G ones. China Mobile started building the world's largest TD-LTE trial network in the Chinese mainland in January 2011, when the Phase 1 scale-trial began. Among the 10 pilot cities, Hangzhou, Shenzhen and Guangzhou will conduct in-depth testing and offer pre-commercial 4G services to the public.

The central government has also showed strong support for accelerating the development of TD-LTE.

Shi Lirong, president of ZTE Corp, the world's fifth-largest telecom gear maker and fourth-largest mobile phone manufacturer, said the company would introduce its first TD-LTE smartphone by the end of this year.

Eight telecom carriers across the world have so far deployed nine TD-LTE commercial networks. As announced in the recent GTI operator's action plan, 500,000 TD-LTE base stations are planned to be deployed globally by 2014 with more than 100 terminal models covering more than 2 billion people.

With the sharp rise in data traffic on networks and growing numbers of people surfing the Web on mobile phones, China Mobile will build a smart pipe, open platforms, featured businesses and an integrated interface to establish a leading position in the mobile Internet, Xi said.
